Additional Factors in the
Selection of an Offshore Centre
-
Language - It is advisable that a
centre is chosen which uses the same language as the client (and
possibly the client's adviser). In view of the number of centres
and their geographic spread it should be possible for a client
to find a jurisdiction which speaks his language.
-
Cost - This is often a consideration
but should not be the main criteria on which a decision is
based. Generally speaking, the cost for the provision of
financial services has decreased over the years. This is mainly
a result of the increase in the number of offshore centres and
the resulting increase in the number of service providers.
Although it is important for clients to receive value for money
in relation to the services which they choose, it is equally
important for them to remember that the choice of centre should
be made based on a number of factors and not just on fees and
expenses. These include the suitability and attractions of the
local laws (such as on trusts and companies), the quality of the
service providers and often more importantly the reputation of
the centre.
-
Reputation of the Centre - There are a
great many offshore centres to choose from and making a choice
can be difficult as there will often by many similarities
between each location. The reputation of a particular centre can
therefore play an important part in the selection process. After
all, a client will be less likely to place his assets in a
structure in a centre which has suffered recent economic or
political problems or worse still, a financial scandal. The
older and more established offshore centres often benefit in
this area as many can boast a trouble- free past without serious
incident. This adds to their reputation as a solid and
respectable offshore centre. On the other hand, the new or
developing centres have no proven track record as they are new
to the industry, and as a result, have little or no reputation
which can be marketed to attract potential clients.
-
Same Time Zone - The ability of the
client to pick up the telephone and speak to his offshore
service provider at a reasonable hour can be an important factor
in the selection process and as a result a centre might be
required which is situated in the same time zone as the client.
This may still mean there will be a choice between centres in
that same zone but at least the search will be narrowed down.
-
Climate - Do not forget that there are
clients who will weigh up the pros and cons of different centres
and then make their final decision based on the relative merits
of the climate of the jurisdiction chosen. You might be
surprised at the number of clients who choose a jurisdiction in
the Caribbean in which to place their hard earned wealth because
they like the sunshine!
